Espanyol defender Leandro Cabrera was shown a straight red card following a VAR review during their La Liga clash against FC Barcelona. The incident occurred in the 80th minute when Cabrera made a challenge on teenage forward Lamine Yamal.
Referee César Soto Grado consulted the pitch-side monitor before determining that Cabrera had struck Yamal in the stomach with excessive force while challenging for the ball. The decision to dismiss the defender was officially attributed to “violent conduct,” as noted in the match report.
Espanyol manager Manolo González strongly disagreed with the call, accusing the Barcelona players of exaggerating the incident. "We’re ruining football. That wasn’t a red card or an act of aggression," González stated. "It’s an avoidable action, but not one that deserves such a punishment."
The sending-off has sparked debate over the consistency of refereeing decisions and the growing influence of VAR. As a result of the suspension, Cabrera will miss Espanyol’s upcoming fixture against Osasuna but will be available for their final match of the season against Las Palmas.
