Viswashkumar Ramesh is the only known survivor from Air India Flight 171, which tragically crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, 2025, near Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, operating the flight to London Gatwick, carried 242 individuals—230 passengers and 12 crew. The accident occurred a mere 30 seconds into the flight when the aircraft reached approximately 625 feet before losing contact and descending into a residential area.
Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national of Indian origin who has resided in London for the past two decades, was seated in 11A, an emergency-exit row— a position authorities believe played a crucial role in his survival. He described a brief but catastrophic event: "Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and the plane crashed. It all happened very quickly." He recounted emerging from the wreckage amid debris and casualties, then making his way to an ambulance and being transported to a hospital.
Medically, Ramesh has sustained multiple contusions and hematomas but remains alert and in stable condition under ongoing treatment. His brother, who was travelling with him, unfortunately remains missing.
This crash marks the first fatal accident involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since its introduction in 2011, with nearly all 242 aboard perishing, in addition to victims on the ground in the affected residential area and college hostel.
Authorities from India’s AAIB, the UK’s AAIB, the US NTSB, and Boeing are actively investigating possible causes, including engine issues and failure to retract the landing gear.
