Benjamin Mendy Released by FC Zurich After Brief Stint
Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has parted ways with Swiss club FC Zurich after making only eight appearances. The termination of his contract, which was initially set to run until the summer of 2026, was carried out by mutual consent following concerns over his off-field behavior.
Mendy reportedly drew criticism from club officials after attending a party just hours after Zurich suffered a 4–0 defeat to rivals Basel in April. Manager Ricardo Moniz publicly expressed disappointment, stating that Mendy failed to meet the physical and professional standards expected at the club. Club president Ancillo Canepa echoed the sentiment, describing the situation as “not a happy story”.
The 31-year-old joined Zurich in February following a short spell at French side Lorient. His move to Switzerland came after being cleared of multiple legal charges and winning an employment tribunal against Manchester City over unpaid wages.
