Former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka is set to return to the Premier League, as he prepares to join Sunderland on a three-year contract. The Swiss international has arrived in England and is scheduled to undergo a medical on Tuesday, July 29, before officially signing with the newly promoted side.
Sunderland have reportedly agreed a transfer fee of £13 million with Bayer Leverkusen, with performance-related add-ons potentially raising the deal to £17 million. The move marks a major addition to Sunderland’s summer recruitment, aimed at strengthening the squad ahead of the Premier League season.
Xhaka, 32, spent seven years at Arsenal, making nearly 300 appearances and winning two FA Cups before moving to Leverkusen in 2023. During his time in Germany, he played a key role in Leverkusen's historic Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double last season.
Despite Leverkusen coach Erik ten Hag’s desire to keep him, the club eventually sanctioned the transfer. Xhaka is expected to bring valuable experience and leadership to a Sunderland side that has already invested heavily in new talent this summer.
