Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung‑min has announced his decision to leave the club this summer after a decade of service, opting to join Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC (LAFC). The 33‑year‑old revealed his intentions at a press conference held in his native South Korea during Spurs’ pre‑season tour.
Son described the move as “the most difficult decision” of his career, citing a sense of completion at Tottenham and a desire for a fresh challenge after ten years with the club. Since joining Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, he has scored 173 goals and provided 101 assists across 454 appearances, cementing his legacy as one of the club’s all‑time greats.

Son is expected to make his final appearance for Spurs in Sunday’s friendly against Newcastle United at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, where he will captain the side in front of a passionate home crowd. Spurs boss Thomas Frank confirmed that Son will start and lead the team out, hailing him as “a true Spurs legend” and one of the Premier League’s finest wingers.

LAFC is now in advanced talks with both Son and Tottenham over a potential transfer. According to multiple sources, the MLS club has tabled an initial offer in the region of £15 million (approximately $20 million USD), seeking to sign Son as a Designated Player. Personal terms are reportedly agreed, and negotiations are nearing completion.

LAFC's profile includes former Tottenham stars such as Hugo Lloris, and adding Son would elevate their attacking credentials alongside Denis Bouanga. The move is also expected to offer substantial commercial value, given Los Angeles’s large South Korean community.

Throughout his decade at Spurs, Son played every role across the forward line. He became Tottenham’s fourth all‑time top scorer, lifted the Europa League trophy in 2025—Tottenham’s first major honour in 17 years—and collected individual accolades including a Premier League Golden Boot and the FIFA Puskás Award.

Thomas Frank emphasized the positive timing of this farewell, suggesting Son departs at the height of his powers: “It is never easy to find the perfect timing… him leaving on a high makes sense.” Several Spurs players, such as Brennan Johnson and Mathys Tel, are expected to step up in his absence.
