Super Eagles goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye has issued a public appeal to Nigerians and football fans worldwide, requesting that they refrain from referring to him as Manchester United’s Cameroonian goalkeeper, Andre Onana. Adeleye, currently in camp with the Nigerian national team ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, addressed the matter following repeated instances of mistaken identity due to his resemblance to Onana in both facial features and hairstyle.

In a statement shared via Nigerian journalist OgaNla Media, Adeleye expressed his desire to be recognized for his own identity and achievements. “To the esteemed public, I wish to clarify a pressing matter regarding my identity. My name is Adebayo Adeleye, and I am a Nigerian goalkeeper,” he said. “Unfortunately, some individuals have been mistakenly referring to me as Andre Onana, the renowned Cameroonian goalkeeper. I kindly request that the public refrain from associating me with Andre Onana, as we are two distinct individuals with different nationalities and careers”.

Adeleye, who plays his club football for Greek Super League side Volos, emphasized his pride in representing Nigeria and urged fans to respect his individuality. As the Super Eagles prepare for crucial fixtures in their World Cup qualifying campaign, Adeleye hopes the focus will remain on his performance on the pitch rather than off-field comparisons.
