João Pedro Admits He Was ‘Scared’ Meeting Cole Palmer for the First Time at Chelsea

Joao Pedro has shared candid reflections on his first encounter with Chelsea teammate Cole Palmer, revealing a mix of admiration and apprehension upon joining the club. The Brazilian forward, who arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton in a £60 million move earlier this summer, admitted feeling nervous about how Palmer—already a standout figure at Chelsea—would respond to his arrival.
“When I came to Chelsea I was a little bit scared about how he was going to react,” Pedro confessed. “I was the main guy at Brighton. I knew Chelsea would be different. I said: ‘Cole, I’m here to help you.’ He knows I can help him, and I know he can help me”.

Despite initial concerns, Pedro and Palmer quickly developed a strong rapport both on and off the pitch. Their chemistry has already translated into results, with Pedro scoring three goals in the FIFA Club World Cup—including one in the final—and contributing two goals and two assists in Chelsea’s opening Premier League matches. Palmer, meanwhile, has continued to shine as the team’s talisman, with an impressive record of 37 goals and 19 assists in 70 league appearances.

Pedro emphasized the importance of their partnership, noting that while Palmer is more reserved, they often discuss the potential of their collaboration. “Cole doesn’t like to talk much, but we talk about how good the season can be if we link up,” he said. “When I joined in the USA, he even asked me how many goals I was going to score this season. I call him sometimes. After he didn’t play at West Ham, the next day I texted him. We have a very good relationship”.

As Chelsea continues its strong start to the season, currently sitting second in the Premier League behind Liverpool, Pedro remains focused on contributing to the team’s success. With ambitions that include competing for the Golden Boot and even dreaming of one day winning the Ballon d’Or, his arrival has added both talent and humility to a squad brimming with potential.
