Former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is shaking up his fight preparations in bold fashion. The British star has officially split from trainer Ben Davison and aligned himself with the very team that masterminded Oleksandr Usyk’s victories over him in 2021 and 2022.
Joshua, who hasn’t fought since his knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois in September 2024, revealed the switch during the press conference for his upcoming clash against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. The bout, scheduled for December 19 at Miami’s Kaseya Center and streamed live on Netflix, marks Joshua’s return to the ring after a 15-month hiatus.
Instead of training in London, Joshua has relocated to Spain, where he is working under Usyk’s coaching staff, with an individual named Igor expected to lead his camp. The move signals Joshua’s determination to reinvent himself and reclaim dominance in the heavyweight division.
“I needed a fresh environment,” Joshua explained, noting that distractions in London pushed him to accept Usyk’s team’s invitation. By embracing the expertise of the very trainers who once outsmarted him, Joshua hopes to turn the tables and silence critics when he faces Paul.
The fight itself is set to be one of the most talked-about events of the year: Joshua, with a record of 28 wins (24 KOs) and 4 losses, against Paul, who has quickly built a reputation with 12 wins (7 KOs) and just 1 defeat.
