Arne Slot Questions Refereeing After Liverpool’s 3-0 Defeat to Manchester City

Arne Slot, manager of Liverpool, openly questioned a refereeing decision following his side’s 3-0 defeat away to Manchester City. Goals from Erling Haaland, Nico González and Jérémy Doku sealed the victory for City.
Slot acknowledged that City were the superior side in the first half, a fact underlined by their 2-0 lead at the break. He remarked: “We have to accept this result because it truly and fairly reflects the gap between the two teams in the first half.”

However, Slot took exception to the disallowing of a headed goal by Virgil van Dijk, which would have brought Liverpool level. The goal was ruled out because Andy Robertson was judged to be in an off-side position and interfering with play — despite not touching the ball. Slot called the decision “obvious and clear” and said it was wrong.

What particularly frustrated Slot was the perceived inconsistency in officiating. He pointed to a similar goal by Manchester City last season — John Stones’ winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers — which was allowed to stand despite arguably similar circumstances. “Immediately after the game someone showed me the goal that the same referee allowed — City against Wolves last season,” Slot said.

Still, Slot was clear to stress that this decision did not fully explain Liverpool’s defeat. “These things didn’t help us,” he said. “But again City being 2-0 up at halftime was a fair reflection for the score.”
