Slot confirmed that Isak has returned to full team training, but after three weeks of rehabilitation, he is still not at match fitness and remains doubtful for the weekend fixture. Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Slot said, “He will train with the team again today after being three weeks out. I know I said three weeks ago his pre-season has ended, so now it’s time for us to see where he is. But I have to come back to those words, because if you’re three weeks only with rehab, that doesn’t bring you back to the levels he was three weeks ago. You cannot compare rehab with games of football or training with the team. As much as we try to replicate that, that’s simply not possible. Again, I have to say give him some time.”
Given the situation, the Dutch manager hinted that Hugo Ekitike could lead Liverpool’s attack against Pep Guardiola’s side this weekend. Slot also addressed other absentees in his squad, confirming that goalkeeper Alisson Becker and full-back Jeremie Frimpong are both sidelined with hamstring injuries. In addition, Italian defender Giovanni Leoni has been ruled out for the rest of the season following an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Liverpool will be hoping to continue their strong league form as they travel to Manchester, though Slot’s options up front may be limited with Isak’s fitness still uncertain.
