Sunderland took the lead in the 36th minute when former Arsenal academy graduate Dan Ballard powered a strike past David Raya, ending the Gunners’ run of eight consecutive clean sheets in all competitions.
After the break, Arsenal responded through Bukayo Saka, who capitalised on a turnover to level the score in the 54th minute. Leandro Trossard then fired a stunning strike from outside the box in the 74th minute to put Mikel Arteta’s side ahead for the first time.
However, in stoppage time, substitute Brian Brobbey produced a brilliant volley in the fourth minute of added time to secure a point for Sunderland, halting Arsenal’s impressive run.
The draw leaves Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table with a seven-point lead over second-placed Manchester City, who still have a game in hand. Sunderland’s spirited performance underlined their strong start to the season and their growing ability to challenge top opposition.
Arsenal will look to bounce back in their next fixture as they continue their pursuit of the Premier League title, while Sunderland will head into their next match full of confidence after earning a well-deserved result.
