French football star Kylian Mbappé, owner of the Norman club Stade Malherbe Caen, recently found himself at the centre of a public dispute after French rapper Orelsan attacked his stewardship of the club. The conflict erupted after Caen’s disappointing campaign, which saw the club relegated to France’s third tier and facing financial strain.
Orelsan, a well-known supporter of Caen, fired a pointed lyric in his new track La Petite Voix, stating:“You’re going to sink your city like the Mbappés.”
Mbappé responded promptly on his X (formerly Twitter) account, adopting a tone of irony and defence: “You’re invited to ‘save’ the city you love so much, Orelsan. P.S.: The guy begged us to let him in for 1 % without paying because he didn’t have a penny, but wanted to look like the golden boy of Normandy.”
His post quickly became a talk-point on social media, with fans divided: some saw Mbappé’s comment as justified rebuttal, others as an unhelpful escalation.
The broader backdrop remains troubling for Caen. Since Mbappé’s takeover of the club in September 2024, optimism about a revival has given way to concern over sporting performance, finances and connection with local supporters.
