Bayern Munich have confirmed the appointment of former France and Bavarians legend as its new head coach following the dismissal of Carlo Ancelotti on Thursday.
Ancelotti helped Bayern win the Bundesliga last term, but they only reached the last eight of the Champions League and the German Cup semi-finals. Following Wednesday's 3-0 Champions League defeat by Paris St-Germain, the club's board has decided to dismiss the Italian, who replaced Pep Guardiola at the start of last season.
The club in an official statement on its websitewrote: "Willy Sagnol takes over the management training until further assistant coach. Sagnol will sit on the bench as an interim trainer on Sunday at the match in Berlin."
Sagnol who is ex-Bayern
player was added to the coaching crew in the summer having previously worked as a head coach at Girondins Bordeaux from 2014 to 2016.
Sagnol played 184 times in the Bundesliga for the German giants, while picking up 58 caps for France. Prior to linking up with Ancelotti at Bayern, Sagnol was
manager
at the France Under-21 set-up and Ligue 1 side Bordeaux.
Despite four wins from their first six Bundesliga games, Bayern Under
Anceelotti
slipped to a 2-0 defeat to fellow title-chasers Hoffenheim and most recently drew 1-1 with Wolfsburg.
In Europe, they followed their 3-0 win over Anderlecht - who were also thumped 3-0 by Celtic this week - with the big loss at the hands of PSG
