Independence Day: Nigeria’ll Not Breakup Under Me – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria will not breakup under him.

He said this in his nationwide broadcast to mark the country’s 57th independence anniversary as he described those seeking breakup as highly irresponsible people.

Buhari vowed not to allow the country to disintegrate even as many groups now called for restructuring.

According to him, Nigeria is not going to experience another civil war like in 1967 which claimed over two million lives rather the present government would allow freedom of the people to express themselves and choose the right leaders for themselves.

Buhari noted that most of those clamouring for secession and war were not born when the country passed through a difficult civil war that killed millions of people.

The president expressed disappointment at the elders who were around during the wars and never deemed it fit to caution their children who are now clamouring for another war.

To him, if there must be a restructure, which must be according to the constitution anyway, the national and state assemblies have been saddled with the responsibilities to do so.

He said the task could not be left in the hands of “some lopsided, un-democratic body with a pre-determined set of objectives.”
