Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka suffered a major injury blow ahead of the World Cup after injuring his knee in training.

The Swiss international appeared to be in tears as he was carried off the pitch by coaches and team-mate Breel Ebolo following the clash with Valon Behrami in the driving rain of Switzerland’s training session.

No immediate confirmation of the nature of the injury came from the Swiss FA but local reports claimed Xhaka had been taken to hospital to assess the damage to his left knee.

The 25-year-old is a key member of the Switzerland side and vice-captain to Stephan Lichtsteiner, who is expected to be joining him at Arsenal in the coming days on a free transfer from Juventus.

Xhaka has 61 caps for the Swiss side and has missed only one game for his country since March 2016, due to suspension.

Switzerland begin their World Cup against Brazil on June 16 and face Spain in a friendly in Villarreal 13 days earlier.
