Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique has announced that he will be retiring from the Spanish national team to focus on Barcelona.

The 31-year-old was a World Cup winner with the team in 2010 and played 102 caps for his national team.

He was also in the 2018 World Cup where Spain crashed out in the second round to the competitions hosts Russia in a penalty shoot out.

He was also part of the Spain team that won the Euros in 2012.

Things weren’t always rosy for Pique as he was heavily criticised for his brazen support for Catalonian nationality.

“I have had a really good time, with a European Championship and a World Cup, but that story is at an end,” said Pique while chatting with the press ahead of Barca’s Supercopa clash Sevilla.

“I have told this to Luis Enrique.”

The defender had already spoken about retirement before the World Cup stating that it would be his last one for Spain.

“It would make sense to leave it after the World Cup,” he had said.

“It has been a wonderful time and I have experienced amazing things, but sometimes you have to end cycles and you have to do that in the right fashion.”
