Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren could face five years in prison after being charged with perjury for allegedly giving a false testimony during the Mamic trial.

Lovren submitted testimony about deals with former Dinamo Zagreb director Zdravko Mamic, who was sentenced to six-and-a-half years this June for embezzlement and tax fraud.

The 29-year-old's Croatia team-mate, Luka Modric, was also charged for perjury by prosecutors in March this year.

Prosecutors convicted Mamic, who is one of the most powerful figures in Croatian football, his brother and two others of embezzling €15million (£13.34m) of the club's money since 2008 on multiple players' transfer deals from Dinamo to foreign clubs, as well as not paying €1.6m (£1.42m) in taxes.

One day prior to the sentencing, Mamic crossed the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina and stated he would not be returning.
One of the transfers Mamic profited from was Lovren's move to Lyon in 2010, with the club's former director receiving 50 percent of the transfer fee.

The central defender moved in a deal worth an initial £7.5m, with a further £1.3m in performance-based incentives.

It was claimed that an agreement was signed in a contract that entitled Lovren to 50 percent of the compensation from his move.

And as part of his testimony, Lovren claimed the annex was inserted before his transfer, but prosecutors have alleged it was signed after the defender's move and subsequently backdated.
Having originally given one statement to the Croatian State Prosecutor's Office that would have damaged Mamic, he is alleged to have changed the statement to include information that was of benefit to the 58-year-old.

Modric allegedly gave a false statement to a court about his 2008 move from Dinamo to Tottenham as part of the same trial.
Both he and Lovren could face between six months and five years in prison.
