Chelsea legend John Terry is set to sign for Spartak Moscow with the 37-year-old currently undergoing his medical with the Russian club. The defender has been a free agent since leaving Aston Villa after the Villains Championship play-off defeat to Fulham in May.
Terry was undecided whether to continue his career or to retire but had been expected to rejoin Villa should he decide to carry on his playing days. The 37-year-old had hinted at a return to Villa this week, However, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, Terry has decided on a shock move to Spartak Moscow and has completed part of his medical with the club today. He will fill the void left by Samuel Gigot who is expected to miss the rest of the campaign with injury, according to Sky Italia.
Spartak are said to be keen on signing an experienced defender following the loss of Samuel Gigot, who is set to miss the whole season through injury. Spartak are currently second in the table and have 14 points from their first six matches.
“I loved my time at Aston Villa,” he told the Daily Mail. “I am still devastated that we didn’t go up. The manager, players and supporters were incredible with me but I hate losing and I feel there is unfinished business there.
“Steve Bruce is a great man and with the backing of the new owners, Steve will hopefully get the club back into the Premier League. Don’t get me wrong, if I don’t play again I am content with what has been an unbelievable career, but I’m still hungry to go and play if everything around it is right. If it’s right for me and my family.”
Terry will come up against Rangers with his new club after they were drawn together in the Europa League.
