At a time when most smartphone manufacturers are rounding up product
releases for the year 2018, popular Chinese OEM UMIDIGI makes a die
minute (read: last minute) move by adding yet another top-of-the-line
device to its mid-range arsenal. And although the UMIDIGI F1 has been
subject to rumours, leaks and renders over the past couple of weeks, the
official release of the device even makes it more exciting. This is due
to the amount of amazeballs features the phone boast of, despite being a
midrange.
The phone is also reasonably priced. If you have always wanted to have a feel of a smartphone with a bezel-less full-view display, dual camera setup, waterdrop notch, smooth multitasking, huge battery, and above all, the latest Android 9 Pie operating system, you should check out the UMIDIGI F1; it’s a steal.
The device is a bit thick owing to the big built-in battery but at 186 grams, it is surprisingly lightweight when compared to other devices with smaller batteries. At the top of the display, UMIDIGI managed to squeeze in the earpiece and some sensors just right above the selfie camera. The phone comes with two microphones: one at the top and the other, at the bottom. Other components at the bottom include a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB-C port for charging and data transfer, and thr built-in stereo speaker.
The dual cameras on the rear sits at the top-left corner and are vertically arranged in the iPhone X style: primary camera at the top, secondary s sorry at the bottom, and dual LED flash in between. The UMIDIGI F1’s design is finished off by the three different colour options: Black, Red, and Gold.
A 2.5D curved glass covers the screen and though it is scratch-resistant, you might be disappointed to find out that it doesn’t come with display protection of any sort.
The front-facing camera embedded in the dew-drop notch is 16MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture and other features like face recognition and selfie countdown.
On the software side, the UMIDIGI F1 comes out of the box running the latest Android 9 Pie operating system in its unadulterated form. Yes, stock Android.

Design and Build
The device is almost as similarly and sturdily built as the recently launched UMIDIGI One Max by the same manufacturer. It comes with a waterdrop or dew-drop style of notch which gives the display more real-estate on the front for a Full-view visual experience. The UMIDIGI F1 joins the growing list of smartphones from the OEM to sport a dew-drop style of notch. The device is a bit thick owing to the big built-in battery but at 186 grams, it is surprisingly lightweight when compared to other devices with smaller batteries. At the top of the display, UMIDIGI managed to squeeze in the earpiece and some sensors just right above the selfie camera. Display
The UMIDIGI F1 uses an IPS display with a FHD+ (1,080 x 2,340 pixels) resolution to give the best visual experience when watching movies and just browsing through web pages. The display is a 6.3-inch screen and despite its size, it can conveniently be held and operated in one hand as it comes in 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Pixel density comes in at 409 pixels per inch (ppi), better than the 403 ppi of the UMIDIGI Z2 Pro, the company’s 2018 flagship.A 2.5D curved glass covers the screen and though it is scratch-resistant, you might be disappointed to find out that it doesn’t come with display protection of any sort.
Camera
The combination of the device’s primary 16-megapixels and secondary 8-megapixels 6-element lens with f/1.7 aperture on the rear would give decent images. The secondary lens helps add Bokeh effects to images while other camera features like real-time filters, panorama, face recognition etc also makes sure your images come out looking good. The camera is capable of shooting 1080P videos at 30 frames per second. The front-facing camera embedded in the dew-drop notch is 16MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture and other features like face recognition and selfie countdown.
Processor and Software
The UMIDIGI F1 is powered by MediaTek’s Helio P60 which is based on the 12nm architecture. The CPU comes with eight cores (four Cortex-A73 core and four Cortex-A53) with a maximum clock speed of 2GHz. The CPU is paired alongside an ARM Mali-G72 graphics unit and 4GB of RAM. To store files, documents, multimedia etc, UMIDIGI fits 128GB of storage on the F1. Even better, the device comes with an hybrid Nano SIM card slot which allows further storage expansion up to 256GB using SD card.On the software side, the UMIDIGI F1 comes out of the box running the latest Android 9 Pie operating system in its unadulterated form. Yes, stock Android.
