Google Reassures Android One Update Two Years Guarantee

Google has reassured that devices that are launched as part of the Android One program will get 2 years of guaranteed Android updates, putting at rest rumors that Google is removing this promise from the Android One program.

Earlier this month, a reddit user anshumanpati6 had noticed that Google has removed all mentions of the term ‘2 years of updates’ from its website, which led everyone to believe that Google is changing the Android One program. Google has now issued a statement that its promise of 2 years of updates still stands.

The Android One program was initially launched with minimum hardware requirements and a clean stock Android with promised Android updates for 2 years and security updates for 3 years. However, Google later removed the minimum system requirements as smartphone makers were not able to make enough money from the devices.

Soon, Google announced Android Go, which allowed low-end devices with less RAM to offer users a clean Android experience. Now, most Android One devices are part of the mid-range segment and Android Go devices are occupying the budget segment.

In a statement to India Today, Google said, “We confirm that our promise to provide 2 years of updates on Android One devices still stands and our website design does not impact the promise of this program.”

Apart from the stock Android experience, one of the main attractions of Android One devices is that Google requires smartphone makers to provide 2 years of compulsory Android updates to the devices. It is good for Android One users that Google is not changing this policy. Currently, smartphone makers such as Nokia, Xiaomi and Motorola are offering Android One devices.
