Luka Modric and Thibaut Courtois have been recognised by the International Federation of History and Statistics in Football (IFFHS) for their achievements in 2018.

Modric was named the best playmaker and Courtois the best goalkeeper at Real Madrid's Valdebebas training ground on Friday morning.

As part of a vote between football experts from 90 countries, Modric earned 272 votes, ahead of Lionel Messi (144), Eden Hazard (114), Kevin De Bruyne (36) and Neymar (18).

Real Madrid's Belgian goalkeeper received 181 votes, ahead of Hugo Lloris (109), Gianluigi Buffon (59), Keylor Navas (58), Jan Oblak and Marc-Andre ter Stegen (both 49).

This is the latest major honour to add to Modric's collection of The Best and the Ballon d'Or that he won last year.

Courtois was also named best goalkeeper in FIFA's The Best and at the World Cup in Russia.
