Vice President Yemi Osinbajo disclosed this yesterday, that President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Mohammed Adamu as acting Inspector-General of Police because of his experience in community policing.

Speaking during an event tagged, ‘Hard Talk’, an interactive evening of discourse with Muslim Professionals’ held in Lagos, Osinbajo also insisted state police remains the most effective way to secure a big federation like Nigeria.

He said: “You need to have a head of police who is familiar with the community. You find sometimes that a police man who is transferred from Ebonyi state to Zamfara, he doesn’t even understand the language even if they are conspiring against him to kill him, he won’t even know.

“That is why policing everywhere is local and it just has to be local, that is why state police is possibly the long term option. But in the meantime what we are trying to do is to ensure that we keep reforming the police. The current Acting Inspector-General of Police, one of the reasons he was picked is because of his focus on community policing and his experience in community policing”.

While responding to the controversy over hijab raised by some participants, Osinbajo said the Federal Government would not intervene on the issue since there were cases in court.

He, however, said the only plausible solution to enforce the usage of hijab at the state level is to push for a law to allow Muslim women wear it without any hindrance.

Osinbajo urged Nigerians to stop comparing Nigeria with smaller countries with less population and less complicated federal system like Nigeria.

Responding to a concern raised by a participant that Ghana was overtaking Nigeria in foreign investment because of insecurity, he said: “Don’t ever worry about Ghana, you know people keep talking about Ghana undercutting Nigeria. You know compared to us, Ghana is a very little country, very, very small country. Just give an example, one of the big banks in Ghana is Zenith Bank and Zenith Bank will tell you their whole operation in Ghana, all the money they make can’t equal their Apapa branch.”
