United moved back into the top four on equal points with Tottenham, who play on Sunday, though Arsenal will move back ahead of them if they beat Newcastle at The Emirates on Monday.

Asked whether he was anticipating qualification going down to the wire, Solskjaer said: 'Definitely. It's so tight and there are four very good teams challenging for two places. Now we are almost in the driving seat. We have given ourselves a fantastic chance.'

With United dominated by Watford for long periods, Solskjaer said the international break had affected his players and had to address the issue of Paul Pogba, revived under the new manager, but poor on Saturday.

'Paul is important for us and we couldn't keep the ball today. We had 50-50 possession at home, so you are a bit disappointed with that. Paul has been away, played two games with France. He's playing bit deeper for them so that is something we may have to think about to get him more involved and make him dictate the game.

'As you've seen Paul can do both, he can attack and defend. Today we had two strikers for did it for us in Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. I thought Rashy was fantastic, he gave us the energy the others lacked.'
