Man City could be banned from the UEFA Champions League

Manchester City have consistently denied any wrongdoing and any suspension would likely trigger a fierce legal battle

Manchester City could reportedly face a one-season ban from the Champions League if found guilty of financial irregularities.

City have been under investigation by a regulatory committee over a series of leaks into their financial conduct published in German outlet Der Spiegel.

Officials from UEFA's financial control board met two weeks ago in Switzerland to finalise their findings, with a submission to be filed possibly as soon as this week.

And the body, led by the former Prime Minister of Belgium Yves Leterme, will push for at least a one-season ban from the Champions League, according to the New York Times.

It would come as a huge blow to City and their mega-rich owners after the Blues celebrates a fourth Premier League title in eight seasons, and their second in two years, on Sunday.

City will bid to complete an unprecedented domestic treble against Watford in the FA Cup final on Sunday, but it is Europe's biggest prize, the Champions League, which they are desperate to land.

The club have consistently denied any wrongdoing and any effort to ban them from Europe's top table would likely spark a huge legal fight.

It is unclear whether any suspension would kick in from the start of the new season, or from the 2020-21 campaign.

“The accusation of financial irregularities are entirely false,” City said in a statement earlier this year. “The club’s published accounts are full and complete and a matter of legal and regulatory record.”
