Arsenal are set to complete the signing of German goalkeeper Markus Schubert on a free transfer, according to reports.

The 21-year-old is out of contract at Dynamo Dresden and is highly-rated as one of the most promising goalkeepers in Europe.

Petr Cech retired from football following Arsenal’s Europa League final defeat to Chelsea, while David Ospina is set to join Napoli on a permanent deal.

Unai Emery is keen to keep Bernd Leno on his toes and former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat identified Schubert as perfect competition for the former Bayer Leverkusen stopper.

According to the Independent, a deal for the goalkeeper is imminent and he’s set to become Arsenal’s first signing of the summer.

The Gunners are said to have already explored the possibility of sending Schubert on loan and have sounded out Championship clubs over his availability.

Arsenal have reportedly given Napoli until the end of next week to finalise a £3.1m move for Ospina.

The Colombian could return to the Emirates as back-up for Leno should the Serie A giants fail to take up their option to sign him.

That would almost certainly mean Schubert would leave on loan.
