Chelsea may be serving a transfer ban but the 2019 Europa League champions have felt it best to let go of rising star, Ethan Ampadu, who has left Stamford Bridge to sign for German Bundesliga side, RB Liepzig, on a season-long loan deal.

Ampadu’s latest adventure away from the Blues to the German club comes two years since the Wales international was first sent out on loan to play for Exeter City two years ago.

In his two years at Chelsea so far, Ampadu has made 12 appearances, with seven of them coming as starts. During the 2018/19 season, the young defender played in three of Chelsea’s Europa League games and in September 2018 he signed a new five-year contract with the club.

Ampadu was on the radar of Chelsea boss, Frank Lampard, back when he was manager at Championship side, Derby County, with the former Blues midfielder revealing as much during the London club’s pre-season stop in Japan.

According to Lampard, he had tried to sign Ampadu on loan for the 2018/19 season. The Chelsea boss went on to state that while he is a big fan of the youngster’s abilities, the idea of sending him out on loan to get more playing time came up.

Lampard went on to state that he is slightly disappointed to let go of Ampadu as he was eager to work with the Welsh player this coming season, but the decision to loan him out is in his best interest.

Ampadu becomes Leipzig’s fourth signing in the summer transfer window, with the Bundesliga side also signing Christopher Nkunku from Paris Saint-Germain, Hannes Wolf from Austrian side RB Salzburg, and Brazilian full-back Luan Candido from Palmeiras’ youth team.

Meanwhile, Leipzig sporting director Markus Kroesche expressed the club’s delight at signing Ampadu, highlighting that the player already has a wealth of experience at club and international despite being only 18 years old.

Despite Chelsea’s transfer ban, Ampadu becomes the ninth player who has left the London outfit this season following the departures of Eden Hazard, Super Eagles star Ola Aina, Tomas Kalas, former captain Gary Cahill and striker Gonzalo Higuain whose loan from Juventus expired at the end of last season.
