CAF Champions League Winner Al Ahly fire their manager after loss in cup game

Record winners of the CAF Champions League, Al Ahly, have parted company with manager, Martin Lasarte, following the Red Devils’ shock loss in the Round of 16 of the domestic cup competition on Saturday.

The reigning Egyptian league champions welcomed Pyramids to the Borg El Arab Stadium where a 55th minute goal from Eric Traory was enough to condemn the eight-time Champions League winners to defeat.

Lasarte’s sack by Al Ahly comes after the Uruguayan tactician led the Egyptian giants to the Premier League title, the club’s 41st triumph, following a review of the campaign so far by Al Ahly’s committee.

Ah Ahly had appointed Lasarte in December 2018 with the 58-year-old helping the Red Devils overturn a massive 17-point gap to beat Zamalek to the league title last season.

The club went on to move swiftly in naming a replacement for Lasarte, with Mohamed Youssef getting tasked with the job to manage Al Ahly on an interim basis until a foreign technical director.

Youssef’s first game in charge of the club will come in the CAF Champions League preliminary round where Al Ahly face Atlabara in a second leg match on August 23.

The Red Devils head into that encounter with one leg into the next round having claimed a comfortable 4-0 win over their South Sudanese opponents in the first leg just over a week ago.
