Kieran Tierney claimed one of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s many Arsenal training records during his medical, setting a new best for the vertical jump despite being injured.

The Scot finally completed his protracted move from Celtic to north London in a £25million deal on deadline day, though fans won’t get to see him for another six weeks as he recovers from a double hernia operation.

Despite the injury, Tierney passed his medical with flying colours and stunned Arsenal coaches – and his new teammates – with his performance in training.

The 22-year-old was given a series of exercises to perform on Thursday, including a hands-on-hips vertical jump.

With his very first effort he got 50cms off the ground, with the Arsenal coach saying he’d ‘smashed it already’ and revealing he was only 4cms short of Aubameyang’s record.

A broad smile appeared on Tierney’s face as he accepted the challenge, saying ‘I’ll try and beat that’, and he duly delivered a monster jump that had the coach – and teammate Rob Holding – exclaim out loud.

Tierney put down a 55cm standing jump, edging out Aubameyang from top spot, as Holding whooped and congratulated his new teammate.

Aubameyang still has plenty of records to his name, though, and is one of the best performers in training – notably leading the one-legged triple jump test.

Speaking about Tierney’s arrival, manager Unai Emery said: ‘We’re delighted Kieran is joining us. He’s a very talented player who will continue to improve. He increases our options defensively and I look forward to him joining our group.’
