'It was a big mistake': Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino slams England's early closure of the English transfer window

Mauricio Pochettino refused to be drawn on the future of Christian Eriksen but admitted the early closure of the English transfer window - with two weeks to run in Europe - could cause disruption at Tottenham.

Eriksen, who has one year left on his current contract, turned down a move to Manchester United and could still be snapped up by a European club but Pochettino insists he has no concerns over the midfielder's focus even as his future at Tottenham hangs in the balance.

The Dane is being tracked by Atletico Madrid, who recently signed Kieran Trippier for £20million, though Real Madrid have long been touted as his preferred destination.

Mauricio Pochettino believes that Premier League clubs are hindered by the transfer window
Speaking ahead of his side's Premier League opener against Aston Villa, Pochettino said: 'All the personal situations I think it's not right to talk, there are a lot of rumours… we cannot waste time talking about every rumour that appears in the news.'

He added: 'I am more than happy to have the squad we already have after the close of the transfer window in England.'

The Argentinian, however, admitted he felt disadvantaged by the early closure of the window in England.

Last season the end of the window was moved forward from its traditional end date of September 1 to prevent distractions in the early weeks of the campaign.

However, as England are the only country to change so far, it potentially leaves Premier League clubs clubs vulnerable to losing star players to top European clubs without being able to recruit replacements.

The Spurs boss backed Christian Eriksen to remain focused despite interest from clubs abroad
Pochettino said: 'We are at a disadvantage to the European clubs because they have 20 more days to operate and I think it was a big mistake from the Premier League to allow that.

'In some times it's good because you are going to start the season but in this type of situation you know we open the door to other clubs in Europe to try and create confusion in your squad.

'I think, after two seasons operating in this way, the Premier League has realised that if Europe hasn't changed, we need to go back and start to operate in the same way as they do now.

'We cannot, England and the Premier League, give this disadvantage to the European clubs because we are going to compete (with them). It's different if you're not competing in the Champions League and Europe.

'With them, OK I understand closing before we will all agree on that but after competing with the other European clubs it's a big advantage for them that they can operate and can create a mess in clubs like ours, or different clubs in England.'

On Eriksen's mindset, he added: 'I not concerned, all our players are so professional, the players' commitment is not in doubt, with one or two or five years left, they are professional and the players we have today in the squad they showed commitment to the team and club.'

Attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso was one of two deadline day arrivals for Tottenham
Pochettino insisted Eriksen remained an important part of his squad moving forward, starting against Aston Villa on Saturday.

After a barren few windows, Spurs had a busy deadline day, securing deals for Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso to add to the club-record singing of Tanguy Ndombele earlier in the window.

The Spurs manager called for patience with his new signings but he will be without a host of first-team players for the visit of the newly-promoted side.

Juan Foyth and Hueng-min Son are both suspended, while Ben Davies, Dele Alli and new signing Sessegnon are all injured.
