Jill Ellis has won the FIFA Women's Coach of the Year award after guiding the US Women's team to World Cup glory in France this summer.

The British-born American coach oversaw a team of stars including Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan to help America to their second successive World Cup triumph after her team defeated the Netherlands 2-0 in the final in Lyon.

The 53-year-old's win means that England women's coach Phil Neville misses out on the gong. The former Everton and Manchester United player had got the nation in World Cup fever this summer by guiding the Three Lions to a semi final.

On picking up her award, Ellis said: 'I would like to thank my spectacular players they are truly amazing they are the best. As a coach, without the talent, the dedication and the commitment of my players this would not be possible

'I would also like to thank my staff for keeping my team together, fit and healthy.'

Ellis was handed the award by two-time Champions League winner Jose Mourinho as the sport's biggest stars came together on the night.
