Ex-Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie looked to have spoiled the party with a curling strike to put the visitors 2-1 up, after Robbie Keane had cancelled out Martin Petrov's first minute opener, but Benjani struck in the dying moments to equalise, to the delight of the Etihad crowd.
More than 50,000 fans turned out to raise funds for homeless charity Tackle4MCR, and pay tribute to their former captain, who was unable to take part because of an injury, but took to the field to address the Etihad before the game.
A host of footballing legends, including many of Kompany’s former teammates and rivals, were in action, along with several current players, including the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva. And the final score is 2-2.
