Frank Lampard praised Marcus Rashford for his 'special goal' as Manchester United defeated Chelsea in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

The England international gave United the lead in the first-half thanks to a clinical penalty kick, however the home side pegged back after the break thanks to a terrific goal from forward Michy Batshuayi.

With the scores level Rashford proved to be the match winner for United and sealed his side's place in the last eight of the competition when he fired in a ferocious free-kick from distance which left opposition goalkeeper Willy Caballero with no chance.

Television replays showed Rashford's free-kick did take a deflection on its route to goal, but speaking after the match Chelsea manager Lampard praised the 21-year-old for his wonderful strike.

"Well, the second goal doesn't even come into the equation," Lampard told the press.

"That is just a bolt out of the blue. No team can stop that. I think in terms of where we weren't at our best, we were a little slow with our passing in the first-half.

"It's great technique. We've seen Marcus Rashford hit balls with a similar technqiue. Whoever you are in the world they don't always go into the top corner."
