Nicolas Pepe admits start to life at Arsenal has 'not been easy'

Nicolas Pepe has admitted that his stuttering start to life at Arsenal has affected his confidence following another poor performance against Manchester United on Monday.

The £72million summer signing from Lille has netted just once this season, and was again out of sorts at Old Trafford as his struggles to adapt to the Premier League continue.

And the winger admitted that his performances haven't been good enough - but vowed to make an impact for the Gunners sooner rather than later.

'It has not been easy, I must tell the truth,' Pepe revealed to French radio station RMC.

'My stats have not been good enough or my usual performances, it is not the same as Lille or the Liverpool game earlier in the season.

'My confidence must come back. I am not very worried. People may be worried about my statistics but I am not.

'I have to keep working as the level here is different [and] so is the language.

'It is a new league for me and I must adapt quickly. But it won't take very long.'

The Ivory Coast international had largely failed to threaten against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, and was later hooked by boss Unai Emery in the second half.

And despite scoring 22 goals in Ligue 1 last campaign, Pepe has been upstaged in recent weeks by Arsenal's 18-year-old academy graduate Bukayo Saka.

Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane later slammed the 24-year-old's showing on Monday Night Football, saying: 'For the money they paid he needs to do a lot more.

'His work rate, his lack of quality, end product, but again it's his body language. He didn't put up a fight tonight.'
