Jurgen Klopp has sympathised with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and his players in the wake of their Champions League ban.
It was announced on Friday that the club would be barred from participating in European competitions for the next two seasons due to 'serious breaches' of UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
And speaking after Liverpool's 1-0 victory over Norwich, which moves the Reds 25 points above City, their nearest rivals, Klopp said he was shocked to hear of the news.
He said: 'Of course it was a shock, complete wow, what's that.
'The only thing I can say is that what Pep and Man City did since I have been in the Premier League is exceptional, about all the rest I have no idea.
'I can imagine in the moment it's really difficult to understand. You believe the people you work with and that's how it is, they tell you it's like this and that and obviously somebody sees it completely different.'
The Liverpool boss then offered his condolences to the players but said we should reserve judgment until the appeal.
He said: 'I really feel for Pep and the players, but it's the first verdict. They will appeal and we will see what happens, it's obviously serious because UEFA would not react like that.
'Obviously the way they play was exceptional and will be exceptional.'
