Though she was recently blessed with a second grandchild, a cute baby girl, but the joy of being a grandmother is so much tantalizing to Yeni Kuti, that she declared joyfully, “I want more and more children!”
An elated Yeni Kuti who spoke to us today from her base in England, her daughter’s home, shared her joy with us. “It’s a wonderful feeling to be a grandma twice. This is my second time and it is a wonderful feeling.”
The daughter of the Late African music legend, Fela Anikulapo kuti, said “my second grandchild arrived on February 6th same day that the grandmother died three years ago! You know I gave birth to one child but now I have 3 children. That is one child and two grandchildren making three children for me.”
The top dancer and trainer said that both children at birth excited her.
“I was excited for both of them. My first grandchild was a boy. That made me very excited. This time around, it’s a girl. I really wanted a girl so when it turned out that this second birth is a girl, my joy was complete and it made me equally excited. I love them the same way, the boy is my pet because he has been in the world longer, and he knows me so well. But again the girl is such a cute baby, as we are talking now, I’m looking right into her face and she’s such a cute baby.
“I’m in England with them presently; I had to come out here when there were signs that the baby was coming. The boy’s name is Temidire and he will be 2 years old in May, while the baby girl is called Arire Yewande..
Yeni who has already spent two months attending to the baby, says it has not been exactly a holiday for her.
“I have been here for two months. It is not a holiday at all for me. Looking after two children is not a holiday at all. In fact I am happy I will be coming home to Nigeria soon, I am tired (laughs). When I come back I need to sleep for two weeks before resuming my normal work routine (laughs again).
However, despite the work in being a babysitting grandma, surprisingly, Yeni Kuti says she wants more grandchildren!
“I will miss my grandchildren when I return to Lagos. They are both very cute. Since I didn’t have many children of my own, my daughter is now delivering the children for me. I am looking forward to have three more grandchildren.”
Asked if her daughter is in support, she replied, “my daughter just said ‘three ni bo?” That is, the daughter asked where the three will come from!
Asked if she is ready to have babies, Yeni Kuti screamed “No, when I am not an agbaya!” Meaning, she won’t because she is not an irresponsible person! She continued, “I don’t want to have children that are younger than my grandchildren only an agbaya can do that!”
