Eric Dier has been charged with misconduct for entering the crowd to remonstrate in a 'threatening' manner with a Tottenham supporter.

Dier claimed he had left the pitch and entered the stands, clambering over rows of seats in an attempt to protect his brother who he noticed had become involved in an argument with an angry fan.

The incident happened at Spurs' ground on March 4 after they had been beaten on penalties by Norwich in the FA Cup fifth round.

It was the fourth game in a miserable run of six games without a win for Jose Mourinho's team before the season was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The FA wrote to 26-year-old Dier for his version of events immediately afterwards and issued the charge on Thursday.

'Eric Dier has been charged with misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3,' said an FA spokesman.

'It is alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder's actions at the conclusion of the Emirates FA Cup fixture against Norwich City FC on Wednesday 4 March 2020 were improper and/or threatening.'
