Aguero joined City in 2011 and became the highest scoring overseas player in Premier League history in January after eclipsing Thierry Henry's record of 175 goals.

An 18-year-old Owen burst through with electric pace before finishing in the top corner

‘When I was a kid, I looked up to Michael Owen. I’ve always said it. Even in my book,' he said during an Instagram interview with Henry and PUMA.

‘I like him because he’s small. He had the number 10 just like in my club and he played as a forward.

The Man City star said the former Liverpool man made him want to play in the Premier League
‘So I told myself if a small player like him is doing well in the Premier league then I could make it too. Imagine that I was only a kid. I was 9-10 years old.

‘It was in 1997/98/99. He scored this amazing goal with England. I was a kid and when I saw that goal I couldn’t believe my eyes.

‘I was watching the World Cup in my neighbourhood and I was telling everyone that I loved Owen.’

England drew the last 16 match 2-2 in normal time but were reduced to ten men as David Beckham was sent off. The Three Lions went on to lose 4-3 on penalties.

Aguero scored his 180th Premier League goal against Sheffield United before football was suspended and has won 14 trophies in his nine years at the Etihad.

He left Argentina in 2006 to join LaLiga side Atletico Madrid where he stayed for five years before moving to the Etihad.

‘The Premier League is the best in the world but, at first, my wish was to go and play in Europe. I didn’t think too much, it was just a wish,' he added.

‘My goal was to train, train and play in the first-team and then we’ll see. And fortunately have played in the two best leagues but personally I prefer the Premier League.

‘There’s such an amazing atmosphere no matter what game you play the stadiums are full. It’s beautiful. Football is fast and on my side. I just love it.’
