Yesterday was the final run of games in the La Liga for the 2019-2020 season, Barcelona ended it on a high with a 5-0 thrashing of Alaves on Sunday evening.
Lionel Messi who was on target secured a record seventh Pichichi award as he emerged the top scorer in the league.
He scored twice to take his goals tally to 25 goals in 33 appearances for Barcelona. The Argentinian equalled Athletic Bilbao legend, Telmo Zarra who had six Pichichi awards.
Speaking about winning the award, Messi said: “I always say that the awards and individual goals are secondary.
“It is true that it could have been taken as an important achievement for being the seventh Pichichi, but I would have liked it to come accompanied by the league title.”
It took Quique Setién side who lost to Osasuna last time, 24 minutes to take the lead. Anstu Fati scored before Messi doubled the advantage.
Messi went ahead to set a new record for most assists in a single La Liga campaign, breaking the previous best set by former team-mate Xavi after he set up the opening goal for Fati.
Semedo and Luis Suarez were also on the score sheet for the Catalan side.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema came second as he was four goals behind Messi with 21 goals, while Villarreal's Gerard Moreno was third with 18 goals.
