Taylor swung a great cross into the box and Rodriguez got ahead of Cresswell and his header bounced off the underside of the bar and over the line.
Wood also had the ball in the back of the net in the second half, but it was disallowed for offside.
West Ham had a lot of chances on goal, including Antonio hitting the post, but Pope was equal to all of them, pulling off a number of brilliant saves.
West Ham stay just four points above the relegation zone after that loss and it's an important match for them at the weekend as they travel to bottom of the table Norwich City.
As for Burnley, they move up to 9th in the table, leapfrogging Tottenham, and keep their chances of qualifying for Europe alive. It's a tough test for them next time out as they travel to Anfield to face the champions, Liverpool.
