Raheem Sterling said that his side wanted to bring their "A game" against Liverpool. He added that Manchester City's next season have started following the win.
Sterling told Sky Sports: "They (Liverpool) have been brilliant all year, we wanted to have a good game against them.
"We knew we were behind, have been disappointing at times. We had a test against the current champions to make a point and we did brilliantly. Next season started today and we did well.
Jurgen Klopp tried to avoid the heavy defeat as he brought on Oxlade Chamberlain to help in attack but slide in a Sterling's shot into his own net to make it 4-0.
Former Liverpool star went ahead to praise youngster Phil Foden who has been tipped as a future replacement to David Silva who departs at the end of season.
Sterling said: "This is a team that is evolving and changing, you can see the maturity Phil (Foden) is playing with. I think in the future we have some great players."
