Despite Barca rivalry with Real Madrid, Messi sends tribute to Iker Casillas

The football world witness one of it's greatest icon hang his boots from being in goal earlier this week.

Former Real Madrid and Spanish captain Casillas retired at the age of 39. He made the announcement via his social media space on Tuesday, August 5th.

This comes after he was advice by the medicals to quit the game due to health issues. Recall that14 months ago, he suffered a heart attack during training with Porto.

Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi has taken time out to hail the impact of Casillas in the game of football despite their rivalry. 

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Messi said: 'Iker retires today, but he passed into the history of football a long time ago.
'Not only because he was a benchmark in La Liga, but also because he managed to win everything internationally.' 

The 39 years old goalkeeper made his debut in 1999 for the Los Blancos when he came on as he became the youngest goalkeeper to play in the final of the Champions League, and to win the title. 

Messi added: 'You are a spectacular goalkeeper and it was really hard to have you as an opponent.

'But, looking back, I also think that it was a pretty nice rivalry that made us have to outdo ourselves every time we faced each other.'

During his spell at Madrid from 1999-2015, Iker Casillas won five La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues. He also picked up the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain in 2008 and 2012.

Casillas joined FC Porto in 2015 on a free transfer. He also won the Primeira Liga and a Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira title with Porto.
