The late kick-off pitted a Nice who finished fifth last season against a Lens who were promoted after finishing second to FC Lorient.
Kakuta opened the scoring for Lens - and his Sang et Or account - 11 minutes in, sending Walter Benitez the wrong way from the penalty spot after Dante had handballed in the home box. Nice refused to let their heads go down against their promoted opponents, though, and restored parity little more than 10 minutes later when France Under-21 attacker Amine Gouiri picked up on Hassane Kamara's pass and crashed and effort in off the crossbar.
One-time Chelsea youngster Kakuta is on a season-long loan deal from Amiens SC following his parent club's relegation. He played his best football in a decade at the northern club and last season's smile remained, the attacking midfielder's trickery threatening to cause Nice problems. The end product eluded the visitors though and Nice punished their profligacy when Gouiri completed his double with 15 minutes to play.
