Welbeck opened the scoring with Konsa pegging Potter's side back after the break. March then grabbed the winner with a composed right-footed finish into the top corner. Late drama followed as Lamptey received two yellow cards within four minutes before referee Oliver gave and then overturned a penalty to Villa for a foul on Trezeguet in added time.
Brighton collect their second win of the season but remain in 16th as they look ahead to hosting Premier League champions Liverpool next. Smith's men also remain relatively unmoved in sixth place and next face a trip to down south to West Ham.
