Mikel Arteta has continued to state clearly that Bernd Leno remains his number one goalkeeper. Last season Leno suffered a season ending injury against Brighton when he clashed with Neal Maupay back in June.
Emiliano Martinez came board and he guided Arsenal to win the FA Cup with stunning performances against Manchester City and Chelsea in the semi final and final respectively.
Martinez was also in goal when Arsenal won the Community Shield when he saved Ryan Brewster penalty after 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Ahead of the new season, he left the Emirates to join Aston Villa for 20m pounds.
This made Arsenal move for Runar Alex Runarsson as replacement for the Argentine who wasn't been able to guarantee first team football.
The 25-year-old joined the Gunners from Dijon ahead of the 2019-20 season, and has only played two games for the Gunners which both came in the Europa League.
Runarsson has revealed that he's open for a challenge with Bernd Leno for the starting position under Mikel Arteta.
“That should be the mindset for everyone, that you want to play,” he told reporters. “It doesn't matter what position you play. Maybe as a goalkeeper it's a little bit different but definitely you have to have the mentality to push to become No.1.
“If it happens in one week or one year that always has to be your mentality otherwise you're in the wrong profession I think.”
Arsenal return to the Europa League this Thursday with a clash against Rapid Vienna.
Asked whether he was capable of challenging Leno for a starting spot, Runarsson added: “Yes, 100 per cent. Otherwise I wouldn't be playing for this club.
