Arsenal will not be in a rush to hand David Luiz a new deal - Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta has stated that the Gunners will not be in a hurry to hand their defender a new deal. David Luiz has been a revelation to the young players in the squad since he moved to the Emirates stadium. 

Recall that Luiz switched camp after he decided to join Arsenal from Chelsea in 2019 under Unai Emery on a year deal. 

Meanwhile, the Brazilian was handed a year extension at the beginning of the season, but Arteta believes that the club will not rush into another new contract for him. 

It's been gathered that Luiz is currently in his final six months of his current Arsenal deal and he will be a free agent in the summer. 

Arsenal will face Crystal Palace at the Emirates stadium later tonight. The game is expected to kick off at 9pm GMT. 

On the contract situation of Luiz, Arteta said: “We will see what happens. There are a lot of things happening around the club, a lot of decisions to make. I don’t want to rush any decisions.

“I just want players to be focused. They know that they have six months left or eight months left, whatever it is, some of them a year. They know that."

Arteta added: "Their contracts are like that, we cannot change that. We cannot change all the contracts right now. I think it is time to be focused.

“We have been through a difficult period in the last few weeks and I just want people to focus on football. If you do what you have to do on the football pitch, you will deserve the chance to keep with us if this is what you want.”
