Robert Lewandowski equalled Gerd Muller’s record by scoring his 40th Bundesliga goal of the season on Saturday.

The Polish striker reached the milestone by scoring from the penalty spot in the 26th minute of their game against Freiburg.

Muller set the record in the 1971-1972 season, after scoring a total of 40 goals in one campaign.

Having scored against Freiburg to equal the record, Lewandowski's team-mates made a guard-of-honour at the side of the pitch and cheered when the 32-year-old ran through.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw after Freiburg came back twice in the game, although Bayern Munich have already been crowned Champions since last week.

Lewandowski's is currently second on the all-time Bundesliga goalscorers list with 276 goals - 89 behind Muller’s record of 365.

After the game, he took to his social media space to express his delight on achieving such record.

According to Lewandowski, he didn't think he could achieve such record but he also gave credit to Gerd Müller.

Lewandowski captioned: "I achieved a goal that once seemed impossible to imagine #Lewy40 ⚽ I'm so unbelievably proud to make history for @FCBayern, and to play a part in creating the stories that fans will tell their children - following in the footsteps of legends like Gerd Müller #RL9"
