The Les Blues threw away three goals lead after they held and advantage of 3-1 but the Swiss pulled two late goals back to extend the game to extra time.
Switzerland had taken the lead from Haris Seferovic inside 15 minutes but Karim Benzema struck twice inside four minutes as France went in front for the first time in the game.
Paul Pogba added the third after he curled the ball from 25 yards, but Switzerland started their comeback with just nine minutes to go as Seferovic scored again, before Mario Gavranovic grabbed 90th-minute equaliser.
Switzerland goalkeeper, Yann Sommer was the hero after he stood firm to save Kylian Mbappe penalty.
The Paris Saint-Germain youngster has been in great form in the tournament. Mbappe was unable to score a goal in the tournament for France.
After the game, former Brazilian legend Pele had sent a message of encouragement to Kylian Mbappe. Pele took to his verified Twitter handle to advise him to keep his head up.
He tweeted: "Keep your head up, Kylian! Tomorrow is the first day of a new journey, @KMbappe."
