Lewis Hamilton has decided to apologize to his Mercedes team after a 'brake magic' steering wheel mode cost him a shot at an Azerbaijan Grand Prix victory.
But after leading in the opening stages of the race, a slow pit stop where Hamilton was delayed by the incoming Pierre Gasly looked to have forced him into settling for third, behind both Red Bulls.

The British driver, however, was afforded an opportunity when championship rival Max Verstappen crashed out from the lead in the dying stages after a tyre failure, causing a red-flag delay.

After the race, he took to his verified Instagram page @lewishamilton and he captioned:

"Today was a humbling experience. We worked so hard to put ourselves back in the top 10 today after a rocky week here in Baku. We gave it our all today and a small error caused the brakes to switch off. Sorry to the men and women in our team, we’ll come back stronger for the next race 🙏🏾"
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton finished in 15th position at the end of the race.

The Formula 1 champion also revealed he raced despite having a heavy heart following the death of a close friend, Mansour Ojjeh.

He described Mansour as a close friend and big brother, while sharing a snap of himself and his late pal.
Sharing on his Instagram page @lewishamilton, he captioned:

"I carry a heavy heart into the race after the loss of a close friend, Mansour Ojjeh. He was a big brother to me. He had the biggest heart and always carried the biggest smile. He fought for so many years with such courage and the heart of a lion. I am so grateful to have known such a man. I will miss his jokes, he was the best at telling them, and his big hugs. This man loved unconditionally. Rest in peace brother, love you always🖤🙏🏾"
