Luis Suarez has been ruled out of Uruguay world cup Qualifiers in the September international break.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward suffered a knee injury in Atletico Madrid's 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Sunday night.

Suarez is expected to remain in the Spanish capital and work on his recovery, in order to recover for Atleti's trip to take on Espanyol on September 12.

"An MRI scan revealed a moderate edema, detected on the posterior part of the player's left knee," Atletico Madrid said in a statement.

Uruguay visit Peru and then play home qualifiers against Bolivia and Ecuador in the September international break.

The statement added: "The club's medical services have informed the Uruguayan football federation and the player has been ruled out of the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifying matches."
