Chelsea have confirmed that Mateo Kovacic has tested positive for coronavirus.

The Croatian midfielder has missed the Blues' last eight games due to an injury picked up in training in October.

The former Real Madrid star was expected to training following a lengthy hamstring injury this week ahead of their trip to Zenit Petersburg on Wednesday night.

Thomas Tuchel side travel to Russia to face Zenit in the final group stage games of the UEFA Champions League.

While speaking to the media on Tuesday afternoon, Tuchel confirmed that Kovacic returned to training after hamstring only to contact Covid-19.

'Mateo was in training yesterday with a big smile and was pure pleasure to have him back,' Tuchel said.

'But he tested positive today for Covid and is isolating.

'There are risks but as a club we do everything possible to minimise that risk. We get tested several times a week and take the precautions to minimise that risk.

'As a club and a team we feel as safe as possible and will carry on doing so.'

Chelsea could seal their top spot in the group with a win against Zenit irrespective of Juventus result against Malmo FC.
